Annual House and Garden Tour:
Held every September since 1969, the MWSS House and Garden Tour
is the oldest and finest neighborhood tour in Pittsburgh. Funds
generated by the Tour enable the Society to further its mission.
Homes on Tour represent beautiful restorations and some that offer
a glimpse behind the effort that goes into a work-in-progress. Every
home is unique; expressing each homeowner's personal taste and style.
In addition, the House Tour showcases a midway full of vendors and
restoration specialists who provide services and information on
historic renovation. [view

Green Space Development:
Green space development enhances the economic viability of the neighborhood.
Mechanics Retreat Park (MRP), a neighborhood landmark on the corner
of Jacksonia and Buena Vista Streets, was deeded to the Mexican
War Streets Society by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation.
MRP receives much-needed revitalization each season through the
efforts of neighborhood volunteers. Other neighborhood beautification
projects along Sherman and Arch Streets include the Olde Allegheny
Community Gardens, which spring forth annually with an abundant
variety of vegetables and flowerbeds; and the Green Millennium Children's
Garden, where inner-city youth connect with the earth through garden-based
educational activities. [view

Clean Neighborhood Initiative:
Clean Up Days are held as a joint anti-litter
initiative between the Central Northside Neighborhood Council and
the Mexican War Streets Society. Neighbors gather to help out with
litter and graffiti removal, weed and tree trimming. PA CleanWays
of Allegheny County has provided gloves, garbage bags and clipboards.
Clean Up Days will continue on a monthly basis. If you are interested
in getting involved with the Clean Neighborhood Initiative, please
call John Engle at 412-231-4359.
Art Show & Sale:
This exciting annual event celebrates the
talents of our local neighborhood artists. Presented at the historic
Firehouse Studios at 1416 Arch Street, the Show opens with an evening
reception on the last weekend in June. A variety of talented artists,
photographers and crafters who live in the Mexican War Streets and
adjacent Northside neighborhoods are on hand to display and sell
a stunning array of handcrafted items. [view

is a time for neighbors to gather and celebrate the season with
music, refreshments and festivities. Canned goods are collected
for the North Side Common Ministries Food Pantry.

Central Northside Neighborhood Council:
CNNC works to create affordable housing, eliminate
blight, increase community involvement, and create a safe and thriving
neighborhood for all Central Northside residents. Located at 1310
Arch Street, please visit their website at www.cnnc-pgh.org or phone 412.231.7742.
National Night Out Block Party:
The first Tuesday in August is National Night
Out, a crime prevention event where all across the country, neighbors
are encouraged to leave their porch lights on, step outside and
get to know each other. Like many other communities, the Mexican
War Streets neighborhood often celebrates by blocking off one of
its streets for a fun summertime party.
